What is Japan Train Typing?
A 60-second typing game where your bullet train speeds up as you type and races through Japan’s prefectures in the order they really sit next to each other. At each station (prefecture), you type a local food, a famous sight or a place name from there in romaji (Japanese written with the English alphabet), and collect a stamp. There is no time-up scene and no game over. Wrong keys never take points away; the train just slows down a little. Free and no sign-up: play in your browser (on a tablet, tap the on-screen keyboard).
How to play
- Press “Start” (or the space bar) to begin the 60 seconds. First you see where today’s trip starts: “Today we start from …!”
- Look at the word at the bottom of the screen and type its letters. Letters you have typed turn gold.
- Each correct key speeds up the train and earns experience, and your level goes up. The train changes from Kodama → Hikari → Nozomi → Doctor Yellow → Maglev and gets faster and flashier.
- Finish a word and you arrive at the next prefecture! You get a stamp, and the train heads right on to the next one.
- Type 10 correct keys in a row to start “Light Speed”: your score grows twice as fast. At 20 in a row it becomes ×2.5, and at 30 it becomes ×3 (the top), with more celebration around the train. A mistake ends it, but you never lose points.
- After 60 seconds, you see your score, your title, the stamps from your trip, and a fact about Japan from Dajaro, the tanuki conductor. If you liked it, press Enter to give him a cushion.
Score and titles
Your score grows by “1 key × level × Light Speed multiplier”. Light Speed goes up step by step as you keep typing correctly, ×2 → ×2.5 → ×3, so the longer you go without mistakes, the faster your score grows. You also get a “station bonus” (200 × level) at each prefecture. There is no top level. Depending on your score, you earn a title: Trainee conductor → Conductor → Driver → Express driver → Dream super express. Your personal best is saved only on this device.
From “⚙ Settings” on the title screen, you can choose lowercase or UPPERCASE letters and show or hide the on-screen keyboard.
What children practice (for parents and teachers)
- Typing basics: the on-screen keyboard lights up the next key and colors the keys for each finger. It also has the bumps on F and J.
- Japan’s 47 prefectures and where they are: the train moves between prefectures that really are next to each other. At a dead end, it warps to a prefecture nearby. Children get a natural feel for which places are connected, like “Akita is next to Aomori”. The blank map in the stamp book shows the places still waiting for a visit.
- Local foods, sights and place names: every word comes from the prefecture the train is heading to.
- Accuracy pays off: a mistake ends Light Speed, so children don’t get used to typing fast but carelessly.
Safe and simple
This game is free, with no sign-up, nothing to install and no names to enter. Records (stamps and best score) are saved only in your browser on this device and are never sent to a server. Each game always ends after 60 seconds, and nothing pushes you to keep playing. You can turn the sound off at any time. On computers that are slow with 3D, the game switches to a light 2D view by itself (the rules and records stay the same).
