How to use it — checking your camera before a video call

  1. Press "Start webcam test". When the browser asks for camera permission, choose "Allow".
  2. Your camera video appears. Check the framing, brightness and whether anything distracting is in the background.
  3. If you have more than one camera, switch under "Choose camera" (useful for a laptop's built-in vs. an external camera, or a phone's front vs. rear camera).
  4. To see how you look to others, uncheck "Mirror the preview".
  5. Press "Check with a snapshot" to freeze the current frame. If you like, "Save this snapshot (PNG)" saves it to your device.
  6. When you are done, press "Stop camera".

What makes this tool useful

  • The camera video is never uploaded — everything is shown on your device (in the browser). Nothing is recorded or saved. No install, no sign-up.
  • It shows the actual resolution (the pixel size of the video) and the camera name in use, which helps you check the device and its settings.
  • Switch between the mirrored view (easier for you) and the orientation others receive (not mirrored).
  • Freeze the current frame as a snapshot to look closely at how you appear — handy for previewing a profile photo.

Mirror view vs. what others receive

Most camera apps and meeting tools mirror your own video so it feels natural, like a mirror. This tool mirrors by default too. Meanwhile the video others receive is not mirrored. So when text (a whiteboard or a document) is behind you, it can look reversed on your screen while reading correctly for others. To check how you appear to others, uncheck "Mirror the preview".

When the camera shows nothing

If the camera is black or shows no image, common causes include (setups vary, so treat these as guides):

  • A physical shutter, cover or tape is over the lens. Some laptops have a sliding cover that physically blocks the built-in camera.
  • Another app (Zoom, Teams, another browser tab) is using the camera. On many computers only one app can use it at a time — close that app and try again.
  • The browser is not allowed to use the camera. Check the camera icon in the address bar, or your browser/OS settings.
  • You have several cameras and one that shows nothing is selected. Switch under "Choose camera".

Frequently asked questions

Is the camera video sent or saved anywhere?

No. The camera video is shown only inside your browser and is never sent to any server. A snapshot you take with "Check with a snapshot" stays on your device and is only downloaded if you press the save button. There is no recording, so no video is kept.

My webcam is black or shows nothing. How do I fix it?

Check a few things: (1) whether a physical shutter, cover or tape is over the lens; (2) whether another app such as Zoom, Teams or another browser tab is using the camera (on many computers only one app can use it at a time) — close it and try again; (3) whether the browser is allowed to use the camera; (4) if you have more than one camera, switch to another under "Choose camera". If it still shows nothing, reload the page or restart your computer.

The video is flipped left-to-right. Can I fix it?

By default the preview is mirrored, like looking in a mirror, because that looks natural to you. Turn off "Mirror the preview" to see the orientation others actually receive. Note that the video sent to the other side is not mirrored — the mirror setting only affects how it looks on this screen, so it does not change how you appear in Zoom and similar apps.

It works here, but only Zoom or Teams shows no camera. Why?

It is hard to be certain, but if it works here, the camera, its driver and the browser permission are usually fine. The meeting app may have a different camera selected, may not be allowed to use the camera, or another app may be conflicting with it. In the meeting app, re-select the camera device, close other apps, or restart the app.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser and allow the camera. On phones with both front and rear cameras, you can switch between them under "Choose camera" (names and support vary by device and browser).

After I am done, does the camera stop?

Pressing "Stop camera" stops the video. On most computers and phones the in-use indicator light turning off means it has stopped. Closing the page or tab also releases the camera.
