Mic Test — Check Your Microphone Online

Check whether your microphone is picking up sound.

When you press the button below, the browser asks for permission to use your microphone. Choose "Allow" and the test panel below comes alive.

  • Whether the mic picks up sound
  • Whether the level is loud enough for a meeting
  • A rough idea of how you sound to others

It takes about 10 seconds. When you are done, "End test" stops using the microphone.

When you start the test, the result will appear here.

No sound is coming through

No sound was detected for a while. Check the following (these are only guides, as setups vary).

  • Whether a physical mute switch on the mic or headset is on
  • Whether your computer or phone (the OS) grants microphone permission to this browser
  • Whether another app (a meeting or recording app) is using the mic
  • Whether the wrong input device is selected in "Microphone in use" above

Hear how you sound (compare recordings)

Record just 5 seconds and play it back on the spot. Recordings stack up in the list below, so you can switch mics and compare. It is a rough guide to how you sound to others (real meetings can differ). Recordings are held only in memory, are never saved, and disappear when you close the page. Up to 5 are kept; older ones drop off.

🔒 Audio is processed on your device — never sent or saved.

How to use it — checking that your mic works

  1. Press "Start mic test". When the browser asks for microphone permission, choose "Allow".
  2. Speak into the mic. If the level bar and waveform move with your voice, the mic is picking up sound. After a few clear responses it shows "Your mic is picking up sound".
  3. On a computer with several mics, switch input under "Microphone in use" to confirm the intended mic is selected.
  4. If you like, use "Record 5 seconds and listen" for a rough idea of how you sound. Recordings stack up so you can switch mics and compare.
  5. When you are done, press "End test". Once the tab's recording indicator disappears, the mic has stopped.

What makes this tool useful

  • Microphone audio is never uploaded — everything runs on your device (in the browser). No install, no sign-up.
  • A level meter (with a peak marker) and a real-time waveform show at a glance whether the mic is picking up sound.
  • If you have several mics, you can re-select the input. It also shows the mic name in use and the sample rate.
  • Keep up to 5 five-second recordings to compare. Each is tagged with the mic used, which helps when comparing devices (a guide only).

What to check before a video call

On Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, "they couldn't hear me" is a common problem. It is usually caused by the mic being muted, the wrong input device selected, or another app holding the mic. If the bar moves here, at least the mic and browser can pick up sound. If a meeting app still doesn't get your voice, review its microphone selection and mute state.

When the mic does not respond

If the level bar does not move at all, common causes include (setups vary, so treat these as guides):

  • A physical mute switch on the mic or headset is off.
  • Your computer or phone (the OS) has not granted microphone permission to the browser.
  • Another app (a meeting or recording app) is holding the mic, so the browser cannot use it.
  • You have several mics and a different device is selected than the one you want.

Frequently asked questions

Is my voice uploaded anywhere?

No. The microphone audio is processed entirely inside your browser and is never sent to any server. The 5-second recording is held only in your device's memory and disappears when you close the page or press "End test". It is never saved as a file.

The bar does not move / my mic is not working. What can I check?

Check a few things: whether a physical mute switch on the headset or mic is on; whether your computer or phone (the OS) has granted microphone permission to this browser; whether another app (a meeting or recording app) is using the mic; and, if you have more than one mic, whether the right input is selected in the picker above. Re-selecting the mic, or closing other apps and reloading the page, often fixes it.

The test works, but people cannot hear me in Zoom or Teams.

If the bar moves here, your mic and browser are picking up sound. In that case check the meeting app: the most common causes are being muted inside the app, or the app having a different input device selected. Each app is different, but reviewing the app's microphone selection and mute state usually resolves it.

My recorded voice sounds muffled. Is my mic bad?

Not necessarily. Sitting far from the mic, reflective walls or a desk nearby, or the mic pointing away from your mouth can all make your voice sound muffled. Moving closer, testing in a quiet place, or using a headset can help. This playback is only a rough guide to how you sound — real meetings can differ because apps add noise suppression and gain.

Does it work on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Mobile browsers such as Safari on iPhone/iPad and Chrome on Android support microphone access. Choose "Allow" when prompted. If it does not respond, check that your device settings grant the browser microphone permission.

After the test, does the microphone stay on?

Pressing "End test" stops using the microphone; the recording indicator on the browser tab disappears once it stops. Just to be sure, check that the tab indicator is gone. Closing the page also stops it.
