Tsubo (坪) is the traditional Japanese unit of area, equal to the size of two standard tatami mats. Japan’s Measurement Act defines it as exactly 400/121 m², i.e. about 3.30579 m². One square meter is therefore about 0.3025 tsubo.
Because one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m² (that is 0.3048², since 1 ft = 0.3048 m by definition), one tsubo is also about 35.5832 sq ft.
Tsubo is still the everyday unit in Japanese real estate: home and land sizes are quoted in tsubo, and land is often priced per tsubo (坪単価, tsubo-tanka).
