Darmstadtium is a synthetic, short-lived element.
Uses and research
It has no everyday material uses.
Research with individual atoms
This synthetic element is studied using very small numbers of atoms. Its position provides clues for comparison with lighter elements, but many bulk properties have not been measured. Predictions should be distinguished from observations.
What the atomic number tells us
Darmstadtium has atomic number 110. This is the number of protons in its nucleus. A neutral atom also has 110 electrons. Losing or gaining electrons makes an ion; it does not change the element unless the proton count changes.
The model's rings help count electrons by shell. They are not actual circular paths. Its electron configuration includes predictions, and the appearance is not a measured bulk sample.
